University degree studies at the RISC
The Research Institute for Symbolic Computation (RISC-Linz), which was founded by Professor Bruno Buchberger, is one of the institutes of Johannes Kepler University that is attending both research and education. RISC is not located in the university campus but in Hagenberg which is approx. 25 km north from Linz.
The scientific work is focusing on symbolic computation, which is an area in the intersection of mathematics and computer science, an area which importance is increasing.
Central theme is the finding of exact, symbolic (in other words not numerical) solutions to problems of basic research and application and also the planning and implementation of suitable algorithms.
In the frames of PhD- and degree studies in mathematics and computer sciences, RISC-Linz offers courses with the emphasis on following subjects:
Computer algebra
Combinatorics (symbolic computation in combinatorics)
Algebraic geometry
Computability
Symbolic methods
Computational logic
The degree studies in symbolic computation consists of methodical part, furthermore of individual combination of 10 courses in the above mentioned areas. It also includes an active cooperation in a research project and completing diploma thesis. To facilitate a personal profile fixing, the studies begin with orientation phase and during that phase it is possible to attend courses from many areas.
The PhD-program consists of literature studies, participation in 10 other courses of above-mentioned areas and intensive cooperation in a research project (possibly also an industrial project). In the course of that a dissertation will be penned. A fundamental focus is the development of new, constructive mathematics together with the creation of suitable software.
